Piecing Together the Story

Below are images of the dioramas, or urnas, that have been accounted for to date. Family history tells us that Francisco created many others, and our search for those works continues. By locating additional pieces and uncovering their stories, we hope to build a more complete picture of the breadth, skill, and imagination of Francisco’s artistic legacy.

The Wedding Party

As the story goes, this urna captures the wedding celebration of a landowner’s daughter. Through his art, Francisco brings the occasion to life in remarkable detail—the landscape, the people, the festivities, and the many elements that surround the event. Woven throughout the scene are glimpses of Puerto Rican traditions, from the gathering of family and guests to the roasting of a whole pig over an open fire, preserving not simply a celebration, but a vivid portrait of life and custom in his time.
